Election Related Hacks Continue

News emerged today that the FBI discovered foreign tampering of two state election databases within the last few weeks. The breaches, first reported by Yahoo News, supposedly involved the Board of Elections in Illinois and Arizona. In Illinois, election officials had to shutter operations for ten days after hackers gained access to the personal information of 200,000 registered voters. In Arizona, the election database was hit with malware, but no information was extracted. The FBI believes the two attacks were connected, as well as identifying Russia as the source of one of the IP addresses associated with the attack. These breaches follow the news of recent attacks targeting the DNC, DCCC, and the World Anti-Doping Agency. The FBI and DHS have both released statements instructing state election boards to be more aware of cyber threats this cycle. As of now, election databases are not deemed “critical infrastructure” by the government, but that could change soon, resulting in federal protection of all state electoral infrastructure.
